“ Appreciate what we have before we need to appreciate what we had.”
We went to the Wat Hyua Pla Kang, a temple with many orphans, to do some CIP work. Before the CIP work commence, we climbed up to the highest floor of the temple and admired the view. While we were climbing down , we stopped at every level to pray and gave respect to the particular god. After that, we went to the ground floor field to wait for the orphans to arrive.
We prepared some pictures for them to colour, brought colour pencils , sweets and food for them as well. Some groups also played some simple games with the orphans and some groups folded origami. We gave out the donated clothes to them and they seemed very delighted and excited to have new shirt to wear. Our basketball coach also gave a soft toy ( which she wanted to give to her niece ) to a girl who isolates herself from others.
During the bonding session, they were all smiles and all hyped up for the activities. For a moment there, while they were enjoying themselves, they didn’t seem like anything was troubling them at all and they were as happy as us. They didn’t even seem like orphans then , they seemed like normal kids that don’t lack anything. We were very moved. We had a feeling that we learnt more than them learning from us.
We should appreciate whatever we have right now as they have shown a perfect example of it in life. Even when they don’t have parents , they are still living life like we are. Going to school, continuing to learn, eating and sleeping just like us. They might still feel a sense of loss but however, they didn’t really show their pain at all because their eyes brimming with all the happiness and joy they felt for that day.
We have learnt that small things that we do might mean the world to someone. Even when we handed a single candy to them, their faces filled with pure delight. This shows that we should appreciate even the smallest things in life, like for example, we have parents who cherish us and make sure that we are happy and giving us the necessities and also trying to give us what we want. Even if our parent scold us a lot, it is just for our own good and this shows that they care for us.
Singapore is very fortunate as we have good food resources and clean water to consume. We should be grateful that we have a shelter over our heads and every necessity. Although they are from the orphanage, they still treat others with the respect they deserve and we should learn from them.
In the end, we should really appreciate what we have and not take anything for granted.
