Loi Krathong Festival

Loi Krathong is a festival that is celebrated yearly in Thailand on the day of the full moon of the 12th Thai month. The krathong, which is floated into the river, requires banana leaves, a section of a banana tree trunk, pins, staples, scissors, flowers, candles & joss sticks to make. It is believed that when the krathongs are floated down the river, it would mean that the people have better days ahead of them, and also as a prayer to the river spirits.

Finished Loi Krathong!
                                                              Before releasing the krathong!

From my experience of making a krathong in Thailand, it is rather
difficult to make as the parts need to be of equal length and size with one
another. Loi Krathong also coincides with the Lanna Festival, known as Yi Peng, where large numbers of Lanna-style sky lanterns or floating laterns are released into the sky, which we also participated in during the Chiang Rai field trip.
